A variational multiscale method for inelasticity: Application to superelasticity in shape memory alloys

چکیده
This paper presents a variational multiscale method for developing stabilized finite element formulations for small strain inelasticity. The multiscale method arises from a decomposition of the displacement field into coarse (resolved) and fine (unresolved) scales. The resulting finite element formulation allows arbitrary combinations of interpolation functions for the displacement and the pressure fields, and thus yields a family of stable and convergent elements. Specifically, equal order interpolations that are easy to implement but violate the celebrated Babuska–Brezzi condition, become stable and convergent. An important feature of the present method is that it does not lock in the incompressible limit. A nonlinear constitutive model for the superelastic behavior of shape memory alloys is integrated in the multiscale formulation. Numerical tests of the performance of the elements are presented and representative simulations of the superelastic behavior of shape memory alloys are shown. 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The phase transformation phenomenon due to the crystallographic change of shape memory alloys subjected to mechanical or thermal loading is very complicated. Regarding the thermo-mechanical coupling effects in shape memory alloys, in case of high loading rates, heat generation/absorption during the forward/reverse transformation, will lead in temperature-dependent variation and consequent...
متن کاملUse of shape-memory alloys in construction: a critical review
Shape-memory alloys are known to have two unique characteristics: a shape-memory effect and superelasticity. The shape-memory effect is the ability of the alloys to revert to their initial shape upon being heated until they enter their phase transformation temperature. Superelasticity is where the alloys exhibit comparatively large recoverable strain. Different families of shape-memory alloys h...
متن کاملApplication of Shape Memory Alloys in Seismic Isolation: A Review
In the last two decades, there has been an increasing interest in structural engineering control methods. Shape memory alloys and seismic isolation systems are examples of passive control systems that use of any one alone, effectively improve the seismic performance of the structure. Characteristics such as large strain range without any residual deformation, high damping capacity, excellent re...
متن کاملShape memory effect and superelasticity in a strain glass alloy.
The shape memory effect and superelasticity are usually found in alloys exhibiting spontaneous martensitic transformation. Thus it is hard to imagine that such interesting effects can appear in a system without a martensitic transformation. In this Letter we show shape memory and the superelasticity effect in a nonmartensitic Ti48.5Ni51.5 alloy, which has no martensitic transformation but under...
